Bonnefantenmuseum Maastricht

The collection of the museum has a young history.

This applies to the contemporary art but also to the art of earlier date. Nevertheless, the major ensembles in the collection consist of a so-called basic collection of contemporary art works by internationally renowned artists, related to movements such as Concept, Minimal Art and Arte Povera.

Permanently presented is the work by eg, Luciano Fabro, Iannis Kounnelis, Sol LeWitt, Robert Mangold, Robert Ryman, Richard Serra. From a later generation of artists, the museum also permanently or regularly shows ensembles by Francis Alÿs, René Daniëls, Fons Haagmans, Thomas Hirschhorn, Imi Knoebel, Michael Krebber, Luc Tuymans, Joëlle Tuerlinckx.

The collection of old art is characterized by ensembles of medieval Western European craftwork (alabaster, ivory) and medieval sculpture and altarpieces. The ensembles Early Italian Painting (14th and 15th centuries) and Southern Dutch Painting (16th and early 17th centuries) are equally attractive areas.

The museum is also committed to artists working in the region around Maastricht. The so-called Core collection Limburg (example: Pierre Kemp, Werner Mantz, Shinkichi and Ferdi Tajiri) and a major ensemble of the sculptor Jan van Steffeswert and the so-called Master of Elsloo, are also on permanent display.

The collection activity is based on a close relationship with artists, their representatives and private collectors. An important part of the collection presentations we owe to the exclusive long-term loans from collectors Neutelings (medieval crafts).
